Here's how to pick a good watermelon:
Look for a Field Spot: The Field%20Spot is the spot where the watermelon rested on the ground. A ripe watermelon will have a creamy yellow or even orange-yellow field spot. A white or very pale field spot suggests it's underripe.
Check for Webbing: The coarse, web-like brown lines on a watermelon are called Webbing. These are pollination points, where sugar seeps out. More webbing generally indicates a sweeter watermelon.
Tap and Listen: Give the watermelon a gentle thump. A ripe watermelon should sound deep, hollow, and full. An underripe one will sound dull and flat, while an overripe one will sound muffled.
Consider the Shape: Look for a watermelon that is symmetrical and relatively heavy for its size. An irregular shape may indicate inconsistent watering or growing conditions.
Inspect the Stem: A dried Stem indicates that the watermelon is ripe. If the stem is green, it may have been picked too early.
Size Doesn't Matter (Too Much): Don't focus solely on the size. Ripe watermelons come in various sizes. Focus on the other indicators of ripeness. A watermelon heavy for its size is preferable to a large, lightweight one.
